The Rock Off Weekly Blog

Monday 26th August 2019

You’ve got to fight for your right to party. So said the Beastie Boys & we agree. In fact, we agreed so much we decided to get some merch out there. This week we bring you…THE BEASTIE BOYS!

"On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair , Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light" …. Name that tune.

I’ll give you a clue.....THE EAGLES

I’m always a bit of a sucker for a great news story that combines more than one of our roster at once & this fits that mould perfectly. Liam Gallagher has released the music video for ‘One Of Us’, which has been created by two of the primary filmmakers behind Peaky Blinders — check it out.

The former Beady Eye and Oasis frontman is set to release his new album, ‘Why Me? Why Not’ on September 20 and ‘One Of Us’ is the fourth single to be released from the album so far after ‘Shockwave’, ‘The River’ and ‘Once.’

 Dead Kennedys

DEAD KENNEDYS

Holiday in Cambodia, a masterclass in atmospherics. The opening 20 seconds of rattling bass and sparse, echoing guitar create a mood of musical paranoia that ratchets up several notches with the introduction of the drums, playing a frantic discoesque beat, and a guitar riff that brings to mind Dick Dale playing on as the Titanic slips under the water. The band was one of the defining hardcore punk bands – PURE CLASS!!!

Queens of the Stone Age QOTSA

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE

QOTSA is an American rock band formed in 1996 in Palm Desert, California. The band's line-up includes founder Josh Homme (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar, lap steel, keyboard, percussion, backing vocals), Michael Shuman (bass guitar, keyboard, backing vocals), Dean Fertita (keyboards, guitar, percussion, backing vocals), and Jon Theodore (drums, percussion). Formed after the dissolution of Homme's previous band, Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age developed a style of riff-oriented, heavy rock music. Their sound has since evolved to incorporate a variety of different styles and influences, most notably including collaborations with Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan and Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl.

Bob Dylan

BOB DYLAN

Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter, author, and visual artist who has been a major figure in popular culture for six decades Dylan has been described as one of the most influential figures of the 20th century, musically and culturally. He was included in the Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century, where he was called "master poet, caustic social critic and intrepid, guiding spirit of the counterculture generation." In 2008, the Pulitzer Prize jury awarded him a special citation for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." President Barack Obama said of Dylan in 2012, "There is not a bigger giant in the history of American music." THE CLASH

Marking the fortieth anniversary of the band’s seminal third album, ‘London Calling’, the exhibition will run at the Museum of London from November 15th 2019 until Spring 2020 and will be free for fans to enter. Some of the items on show at the exhibition include Joe Strummer’s note book with early lyrics to ‘London Calling’ and Paul Simonon’s broken bass guitar after the musician famously smashed his guitar on stage with The Clash at The Palladium in New York City.

The exhibition will also include some handwritten album sequence notes by Mick Jones, Strummer’s typewriter and Topper Headon’s drum sticks – the only item of Headon’s that remains from this time.

Ozzy Osbourne

OZZY OSBOURNE

So, the greatest news this week is that a new book has revealed that Ozzy Osbourne is in fact a genetic mutant. (I’m not making this up) Bill Sullivan, who is a genetic research professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine, makes the claims in his new book Pleased to Meet Me: Genes, Germs and the Curious Forces that Make Us Who We Are.

Sullivan uses a study by Gnome, a Massachusetts-based research company who studied Ozzy’s DNA in 2010 to work out how he had managed to live so long despite his extensive alcohol and drug use.

Sullivan concludes that “Ozzy is indeed a genetic mutant” who has managed to stay alive so song thanks to a quirk in his DNA which has made him resilient to years of substance abuse.

FOO FIGHTERS

Foo Fighters want fans to make requests for their Reading & Leeds festival setlist. The 'Best of You' hitmakers will headline both events - which take place over the same weekend on August 23-25 - later this month and they have called out for their passionate audience to have their say when it comes to what songs the rockers will play.

Taking to Twitter, the band simply said: "So what songs do you wanna hear? #RandL19" Which is nice!!!

Foo Fighters - Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Schiflett, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear and Rami Jaffee - top a stacked main stage line up at the event, with A Day To Remember, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, Enter Shikari, Mayday Parade and The Distillers amongst the big names confirmed for the same day.

Liam Gallagher

LIAM GALLAGHER

So, Liam Gallagher hit the headlines this week with his thoughts on Aliens. The rocker has revealed that he believes they are found in some surprising places. In fact, he says "Aliens are probably angels, or God or whatever. "I'm partial to that stuff, yeah. We've all got little weird things going on where we go, 'Hold on a minute, what's all that here?' "Little coincidences, it's all part of the story. "I do believe that it's not all down to us and that there's something else going on. "The door is ajar on that church when it comes to God, I'm sitting on the fence on that one. But I do believe in the science side of things."

Liam’s UK tour starts 11th November this year.
